Reading about Jimmy’s trip to the emergency department brought back my own childhood memories, and I felt both comforted and touched. One part I especially liked was how the story gently explains each step of the hospital visit, which makes everything feel less scary for young readers. I also appreciated the caring relationship between Jimmy and the adults around him, showing how support can make a big difference. The simple language and clear dialogue make it easy for children to understand what is happening and why. It felt reassuring to see fear acknowledged while also encouraging courage in a kind, realistic way. This is a thoughtful and helpful story that can bring calm to both children and parents during uncertain moments.
4-5 year olds will benefit from the story, which prepares young readers for a visit to the emergency room, accompanied by concerns about injections that can be painful.
The message of the author-doctor is that with the help of direct and clear explanation, empathy, and support, a visit to the doctor can be a positive and less traumatic experience for children who need a medical procedure.
The illustrations are good and depict the different stages of the process of receiving treatment in the emergency room, I would have liked the characters to have expressions that would bring the story to life.
"Jimmy Goes to the Emergency Department" is a children's book about a 5-year-old boy who gets injured on the playground and has to go to the emergency room. The idea of the book is great as going to the ER is so scary for kids and so reading about how it might possibly be less scary is a good idea for them. The issue with the book is there's WAY too much text. The book is designed for young kids, but the text reads like it's for older kids. Having read to and with enough kids at the age of the boy in the book, I've learned that to keep their attention you want to keep text short and let the illustrations be the driver of the story.
The story is easy to follow and helps reduce fear about hospitals. It’s a good read for kids who might be nervous.
The doctor's office can be a scary place for kids (and adults!), and going to the ER can be even more frightening. But "Jimmy Goes to the Emergency Room" does a terrific job of demystifying the experience. The comforting nurse and doctor put young Jimmy at ease and patched him up without resorting to any dreaded shots. As an adult with a bit of an injection phobia, that by itself qualified as a happy ending.
A practical and thoughtful story that introduces kids to emergency care in a friendly way.
The story follows five-year-old Jimmy, who has to go to the emergency room and face his fear.
It’s a relatable and comforting story that helps kids understand their feelings and shows them how to be brave. As a parent, I think this is a fantastic tool to help prepare a child for a doctor's visit.
Cute story to make kids less scared of going to the doctor!
I remember being a kid and needing to go to the emergency room for a cut. I had no idea how it worked, which made it a little scary.
It is so good that there is a book for children about what is going on in the emergency room. This book shows children that you don't have to be afraid of doctors. The drawings are very nice and even though getting stitches can be scary, especially for kids, the story shows that this is nothing to be afraid of.
What an excellent way to help kids overcome their anxiety about visiting the doctor’s clinic or the emergency room! This is a great way to explain to kids what will happen, step by step, in the emergency room. Also useful for role playing and helping kids overcome their fear. The fear of needles is a real thing and kids should not feel extra distressed on top of getting hurt. Books like this take away the intangible terror of the emergency room, replacing with almost an exact, tangible script of what they can expect there.
Teaching kids they can trust the process, be calm, be strong and in the end find out none of what happened in the end was as bad as they thought. Nice to show kids in a book the process of an emergency department and that it doesn't need to be scary.
